How it works

Four steps for every use: a free check, one fixed price agreed before any work starts, and a pack that shows every calculation.

Most packs take 5 to 10 working days from complete data. For 31 January returns we need everything by 8 January. For an HMRC letter or a house purchase, tell us your date at the free check and we'll say whether we can meet it.

What's in your pack

In every pack

  • Every transaction reconciled, with transfers between your own wallets matched
  • Gaps and missing purchase history traced
  • A plain list of every estimate and assumption made
  • Every calculation shown, with the HMRC rule behind it

Then, depending on what it's for

  • Tax return: SA108 figures, every disposal with same-day, 30-day and section 104 matching, income and futures results, and losses you can claim with their deadlines
  • HMRC letter: one pack for each year the letter asks about, ready for a reply or disclosure
  • Source of funds: a money-trail summary your solicitor or lender can follow
  • Year-end review: gains, losses and allowance used so far this tax year
  1. Free checkA 2-minute form or a short call. We look at what you hold and where, and what the pack is for, then agree one fixed price for the work before anything starts. Paying in full starts the work.
  2. Send your filesWe send a checklist of exactly which exports and wallet addresses we need and, for a source-of-funds report, which bank statements. You upload them through an end-to-end encrypted link that expires once we collect them, never plain email.
  3. ReconciliationWe match transfers, trace gaps on-chain and apply UK rules, then send you a draft with any questions and assumptions flagged.
  4. Your packOnce you're happy, you get the final pack: for your tax return, your reply to HMRC, or your solicitor or lender. File it yourself, use your own accountant, or one of our partner accountants can review and file it for you. Our working files are then deleted.

Private by design

We only ever need exchange exports and public wallet addresses.

We will never ask for passwords, API keys or seed phrases.

  • Files arrive by end-to-end encrypted transfer and are worked in a dedicated, encrypted user account used only for client work, with no cloud sync and two-factor sign-in on every account used for the work
  • The transfer link expires once we collect your files. Your files are never shared; we only look up public blockchain records for the wallet addresses you give us
  • Your files are labelled by a reference code, not your name, and you can remove names and email addresses from your exports before you send them
  • Working files are deleted on completion; we keep only your final report and the records the law requires

Questions

Do you file my return or give tax advice?

No. GainPal prepares the figures and records but does not give tax advice, file returns or contact HMRC for you. You can file it yourself or use your own accountant, or one of our partner accountants can review your pack, advise and file it for you.

What do you need from me?

Exports from your exchanges and the public addresses of your wallets; for a source-of-funds report, also the bank statements showing money moving to and from exchanges. We send a checklist. If HMRC has written to you, we only need the date to respond by and the tax years it names, not a copy of the letter.

How long does it take, and can you meet my deadline?

Most packs take 5 to 10 working days from complete data; long or messy histories can take longer. For 31 January returns we need everything by 8 January. For an HMRC letter or a house purchase, tell us your date at the free check and we'll say honestly whether we can meet it.

Do I need to give you my name?

Your files are labelled by a reference code, not your name, and you can remove names and email addresses from your exports before you send them. We need an email address to work with you, and in some cases the law requires us to check your identity.

Can the price be adjusted for my situation?

Yes. If your case doesn't fit a tier neatly, tell us on the free check and we'll agree a fixed price before any work starts.

How and when do I pay?

Pay in full through a secure payment link when you accept your fixed price. If anything in your pack is wrong because of our work, we'll correct it free, and if we can't complete it, you're refunded for the work not done.

Can I use one pack for more than one purpose?

Yes. Once your records are reconciled, the same record can support a tax return, a reply to HMRC or a source-of-funds report. Need two kinds of report, say a tax return and a source-of-funds report for your solicitor? Order them together and the second is priced lower at your free check.

I already use Koinly or similar. Do I need you?

Maybe not. A £99 Report Review tells you whether your report has problems worth fixing, and the fee is deducted if you then want the full pack. Request a review.

I haven't reported earlier years, or HMRC has written to me. Can you help?

Yes. We rebuild your records for every year that needs it, including years an HMRC letter asks about, so you, your accountant or one of our partner accountants can reply or make a disclosure with accurate figures. We don't contact HMRC ourselves. More about HMRC letters.

Can you show a solicitor or lender where my deposit came from?

Yes. A source-of-funds report sets out the trail from the money you put into crypto to the money that reached your bank. It states the facts in your records; whether they accept it is their decision. More about source of funds.

Will you tell me what to sell before 5 April?

No. We don't tell you what to buy, sell or hold, or when. A tax-year-end review gives you your gains, losses and allowance used so far and explains how the rules apply, so you and your adviser can decide. More about the year-end review.

What if HMRC questions the figures?

Your pack shows every calculation, match and assumption, so the figures can be followed line by line.
